Sumner yoga teacher Jess Smith will lead a pre-run stretch at the South Island’s first Wanderlust global lifestyle event at St Leonard’s Park, Sumner, on December 2. More than 1000 people are expected to take part in the 5km run/walk followed by group outdoor yoga, guided meditation and a range of workshops. Ms Smith, who is originally from Santa Cruz, California, said the run was aimed at people exercising together and getting endorphins going before dropping into the yoga. “That’s when the body relaxes; and they’ll have food and music and workshops.” She’s thrilled the organisers chose Sumner. “It’s the bee’s knees! We’ve got the hills, the ocean, it’s got that beach vibe, it’s got yoga – that whole chilled out feel. It seems like on a hot day everybody goes out there – flocks to the beach. It’s the Byron Bay of Christchurch.” She hopes a whole range of people will come and give yoga a try. “Mums, dads, teenagers, the local neighbourhood come and just give it a go.”

Little River fire tanker won’t be replaced until at least March By Sarla Donovan LITTLE RIVER Fire Brigade’s 30-year-old fire tanker won’t be replaced until after this summer – leaving firefighters and residents worried property could be put at risk. Bay Harbour News revealed last week that when Fire and Emergency New Zealand replaced the New Zealand Fire Service on July 1, the city council took back Little River’s almost new water tanker, swapping it for a smaller, slower vehicle. Residents and Little River brigade chief fire officer David Irving are concerned the change would limit the brigade’s capacity in an emergency. Birdlings Flat resident Barb Gaeth has started a petition in response to community concerns. It was put up at a community breakfast event on Sunday, where it collected “quite a few” signatures, and has since been placed in the Little River library and the craft store. •Turn to page 10

LITTLE RIVER residents and their fire chief are starting to get fairly agitated over the fact they won’t get a new tanker until after summer (see page 1). Last week we revealed the city council took back the brigade’s new tanker and replaced it with an older, slower tanker with less water capacity. Today we reveal the tanker won’t be replaced until March at least. The wet winter, which has prompted a lot of spring growth, combined with a potentially hot summer means we could be in for a dangerous fire season. So the people of Little River and beyond who are serviced by the fire brigade have every reason to be worried. A petition has been started and Little River fire chief David Irving continues to sound the alarm. –Barry Clarke

News Light phase overhaul likely By Sarla Donovan ALL THE light phases at the problematic St Andrews Hill intersection could be resequenced. The troublespot was the focus of public consultation earlier this year, with the city council presenting three options to try and solve some of the problems. Though more than 600 submissions were received, none of the three options were green-lighted. Instead, the Linwood-CenRuth Dyson tral-Heathcote Community Board opted in July to trial changing the Main Rd light phasing. But the trial never went ahead, after city council staff decided reprogramming the Main Rd left arrow light for city-bound traffic would create congestion. “The delays that would be incurred by vehicles on Main Rd and Ferry Rd would significantly increase queue lengths in the peak hours. The benefits to St Andrews Hill Rd (users) were minor and did not

outweigh the dis-benefit to the main traffic flows,” said city council transport planning and delivery manager Mike Jacobson. He said another option to change the phasing sequence was being considered and they would inform the board about it this month. It would affect all phases of the lights at the Ferry Rd/Main Rd/Bridle Path Rd intersection. But Heathcote Ward city

councillor Sara Templeton said the original intent of the board resolution to change the phasing sequence of the light was misunderstood, and staff investigated a timing change instead. “I was really disappointed. I’m hoping that the new assessment will be quickly done, so that we can go ahead with the trial and improve the movements and safety of residents coming down St

Andrews Hill onto Bridle Path Rd.” Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson said she found the city council’s response frustrating. “They agreed that they would trial changing the phasing of the turning traffic signals at very little cost with a view to reducing the significant delays caused to traffic coming off the hill. For them to now say that the benefits would be outweighed by the negative consequences is puzzling.”

COASTAL GIVE WAY SIGN A give way sign will be installed on the coastal pathway where it intersects with Scott Park’s Main Rd entrance. The LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board approved the sign at its meeting on Monday in response to safety concerns. It means walkers and cyclists will need to stop for vehicles entering or leaving the park. BEACH SHOWER IN AKAROA Akaroa should have a shower at the beach for swimmers to use, says the Banks Peninsula Community Board. It wants to bring Akaroa in to line with other tourist beaches across the country. The board is waiting to hear back from the city council on whether a shower can be installed this summer.

‘Paws’ for thought before hitting the beach

If you’re contemplating heading to the seaside with your favourite four-legged friend, the city council is suggesting you follow the beachside rules – or you could find yourself slapped with a fine from the city council. The restrictions are in place from 9am to 7pm starting November 1 until the end of March Sumner and Taylor’s Mistake beaches and Lyttelton Harbour and Peninsula beach and foreshore areas are all affected. Dogs can pass through the prohibited areas only if they are on a short leash. “It’s important to follow the rules as enforcement officers will patrol the region’s beaches over the holiday period, so dog owners can expect a fine if they bring their dogs to these spots,” city coun-

The city council is making headway in its push to reduce carbon emissions, writes Heathcote Ward city councillor Sara Templeton Last week the city council set itself the target of becoming a net carbon neutral organisation by 2030; a key part of our strategic direction of climate change leadership. So, why is this important? Internationally, cities account for 75 per cent of carbon emissions and it is up to each city to do its part to mitigate their impacts on the environment. Christchurch is a low lying, coastal city and is already feeling the impacts of climate change with increased extreme weather events and sea level rise. In the Bays area, our communities are very aware of these impacts, with coastal inundation and erosion a hot topic over the last few years. The new Coastal Hazard Assessment Report from Tonkin and Taylor was released on Friday and a real conversation now needs to be had about how we are going to cope with these impacts as a city. As well as adapting to climate change, however, it is in our best interests to try and stop the effects being as bad as they could be by lowering our carbon footprint as individuals and as a city. The new Government has

expressed an intention to legislate national targets for carbon neutrality and this will involve some major challenges and opportunities for our economy. While we are a small country, we need to play our part in the same way that larger countries do. All of the smaller countries (under one per cent of emissions) put together make up 23 per cent of global emissions, China is at 24 per cent and the United States 15 per cent. When Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Environment Canterbury, Christchurch City Council, and the Lyttelton Port Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding committing to work together to create an action plan for restoring the cultural and ecological health of Whakaraupō/ Lyttelton Harbour, we wanted it to be a plan that all those who live in the area and use the harbour could see themselves contributing to. So in the past few weeks we have held a series of meetings to present the initial draft plan to key stakeholders in the area. We wanted to make sure we were on the right track and that the plan aligned with what the community expected of it. We were excited to hear the initial draft was easy to read and understand, and people appreciated the story that flowed through the plan.

The Lyttelton Port Recovery Plan gave us the conceptual requirements to base the plan around mahinga kai and Ki Uta Ki Tai (from the mountains to the sea) whole of catchment management, and it has been important to stay true to these values. One way we have tried to do this is by placing a metaphorical korowai over the catchment, where the species weaved into the korowai are the kaitiaki (guardian) species of the health of our natural environment and our engagement and impact on the landscape. The plan is written using a series of pou - or guiding principles- which include: •“Change Making” – the idea that everyone can be a change-maker with the power to influence the future of Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour; •“Mō tātou a mo kā uri a muri ake nei” (for us and our children after us); •and “Collaboration” – the idea that change will come about with Whakaraupō communities working together to create real and sustainable change.

We received some great feedback from those who attended the initial meetings and our team spent last week incorporating that feedback into the draft plan. We will also have information hubs around the harbour with staff available to answer any questions you may have about how you as an individual or group can get involved in the plan an input into the health of Whakaraupō. Xmas campaign for kids THE LITTLE Ray of Giving campaign is back. The gift drive aims to put a smile on the faces of children and families who may need some extra cheer at this time of year. Ray White Ferrymead partners with Sumner, Redcliffs and Mt Pleasant schools and the Christchurch City Mission to help disadvantaged children who may need a little extra light in their festive season. “This is the third year that we’ve run A Little Ray of Giving and we want 2017 to be our biggest yet,” said operations manager Nancy Vincent Parr. “In our first year, we collected the most gifts of any Ray White branch in the country, which shows how much our community gets involved.” She said the aim was for 500 gifts this year. Those who wish to donate just need to inform the Ray White team whether the gift is for a boy or girl, and nominate an age group from babies to teenagers. “As much as it’s nice to donate your old gifts to friends or families, or the local charity shop, these are for a special day, so we politely ask for new gifts only. “All you need to do is wrap up your new present and drop it under the tree into our office reception,” Ms VincentParr said.

Tasty treats with a message HAVE YOU ever wondered what ghosts and goblins eat? If so, the answer was there for all to see at Lyttelton on the night of Halloween when a constant stream of ghouls, ghosts, goblins and witches made their way to the Lyttelton Bakery. There they feasted upon Halloween-themed donuts and cupcakes in a cavern created especially for the night. The idea was the inspiration of Bree Scott from Glamour Cakes and Vicki McSherry from Vic’s Bakery. Both women had experienced cyberbulling at very extreme levels. Rather than let this get them down and impact on their mental health they decided to respond in a positive way by playing on their creativity to raise funds for charity. The idea for the Halloween fundraiser emerged from this. The pair decided to put their energy into staging a special event, which saw their acclaimed products given a special Halloweeninspired twist. Cakes and donuts were transformed into tasty themed treats to tempt all who were about on Halloween night. The event also provided an opportunity for local children to dress up, put on the face paint and live the fantasy.

$4200 for school LYTTELTON Primary School is now $4200 better off. Principal Brendan Wright was presented with a cheque for that amount by Peninsula Art Auction organisers at a recent school assembly. Mr Wright said they were “very lucky” to benefit from the fundraising event, which is held at the school every two years. A committee of parents transforms the school into an exhibition space displaying work from many local artists,

with a percentage of the funds raised going to the school. The money is used to support participation in events like the Primary Schools Cultural Festival, Mindstorms Lego Robotics and the school’s market day, kapa haka uniforms and 3D printing technology. Funds will also be used to support the enviro schools initiative, a new outdoor learning space and the year 8 camp in Wellington.

Community concern over a proposed commercial development in Church Bay has forced a rethink on how it will look

Kathie Smith – ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.’ So too is how we view our lifestyle. Recently, Church Bay and Diamond Harbour have been described as sleepy and rural. These views were expressed in opposition to the proposed commercial development at Church Bay. When I bought a section here nearly 15 years ago I did not expect to be sleepy. I considered I had bought harbourside and urban in an area renowned for its many clubs and in an environment that motivates activity. Like many retirees, I am constantly busy and sociable. My section was in an undeveloped subdivision, indicating there would be change. Change is one of life’s guarantees – it keeps us alert, energised, motivated and growing. When I moved into my new home there were about six vehicle movements a day past my driveway. Now there are 100. Great – a lot of people sharing and enjoying this wonderful place. From conversations with other retirees and young families, we are looking to the future with additional services and choices.

I’ve spent much of my life working to protect New Zealand’s native species, our special landscapes and our rivers, lakes and aquifers. I welcome the challenge. It was wonderful to be at Banks Peninsula’s Hinewai Reserve on a sparkling day on Sunday to celebrate Hinewai’s 30th anniversary and honour Maurice White. An accountant and business person with a keen interest in birdlife, Maurice’s vision and generosity led the Maurice White Trust to buy the original 109ha Hinewai block in 1987 and, four years later, the 870ha Otanerito Station with help from the nature heritage fund. Thirty years ago, neighbours and local farmers puzzled at legendary botanist Hugh Wilson’s plan to allow nature to heal itself and have scrubby, gorse-covered hills regenerate into native forest.

ANNIVERSARY: Banks Peninsula’s Hinewai Reserve celebrated its 30th anniversary on Sunday.

With help and hard work by volunteers to get rid of the browsers (goats, wild sheep, possums) and in the absence of bulldozers, stock, and herbicides, those dreams have come true. The forest is regenerating throughout Otanerito Valley. In parts of Hinewai, native trees have completely smothered blocks of gorse once fire and stock were removed. Native wildlife is flourishing from songsters like korimako/bellbird and riroriro/ grey warbler to fish like kokopu and eels, tree weta and a host of insects. Banks Peninsula’s

hills were once clothed in rich forest before the fires of human settlement. Hinewai shows what is possible when people work together with purpose and vision. We need to do that all across New Zealand to improve the prospects for 3000 native plants and animals threatened with extinction, and to enable every Kiwi child to be able to experience wild nature close to home. I can hear tui in Auckland and ruru/morepork in Wellington but not in Christchurch because both species are extinct in the city. We can change that if we
